Role Overview and Responsibilities

The company is looking to recruit a Technical Buyer, reporting to the Purchasing Manager. The role's primary purpose is to support the project and engineering teams with the evaluation and selection of suppliers, the management of associated tooling/ process development, prototype parts manufacture and production release to meet the required project budget and time scales.


Secondarily, you will support our purchasing and quality teams in aligning our suppliers’ technical and commercial capabilities whilst also assisting with supplier development and improvement workshops. The role’s primary responsibilities will be as follows:

  • Review component/material requirements for the project/NPI ensuring relevant legislative requirements are adhered to.
  • Source appropriate supply base in order to achieve the product specification.
  • Benchmark supply base to ensure cost/quality competitiveness.
  • Facilitating supplier expertise in the achievement of optimal product quality and cost. 
  • Managing with the supplier the development of tooling and process to meet project budget and time scales.
  • Manage supplier deliverables regarding prototypes, pre-production samples and production run at rate capability.
  • Liaise with internal stakeholders to provide and agree data prior to loading on MRP system. 
  • Ensure supplier conforms to company strategy for KPIs, inventory and lead time.
  • Lead and support supplier development initiatives and specific VA/VE projects.
  • Support the manufacturing team with supplier quality and process improvement needs.
  • Manage non-production orders through to receipt of goods for projects/NPI.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

The ideal candidate will be an experienced purchasing professional with strong technical background and a broad knowledge of manufacturing processes and international purchasing and importing. 


In that respect, you possess: 

  • Minimum of five years' experience as purchasing professional, including supplier selection and supplier development activities.
  • Strong technical background, which means:
    • understand technical product drawings
    • ability to translate product technical specifications to supplier processes
    • understand progression of tool life and behaviour of tool
    • understand requirements for robust manufacturing control system
  • Professional written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Experience with International Purchasing and Importing accordingly.
  • Comfortable with hands on approach to managing a variety of activities simultaneously.
  • Competent using Microsoft Excel and Powerpoint.
