This role is based at our Barnstaple location, part of the Power Electronics division, where we employ approximately 250 employees and specialise in the manufacture of wound components, printed-circuit board assemblies, cabinet wiring and electronic test equipment for the civil aircraft, space, and defence industries.
We are looking for a versatile engineer to design inductors, transformers, occasionally electromagnets, particularly optimised for efficiency with regard to skin and proximity effects. We envisage the right person will use Finite Element Analysis to model and predict performance, particularly in geometries using a large air-gap. Power levels generally a few watts but occasionally a few kilowatts needs to be tackled; frequency ranges from DC to 1MHz.
The ideal person will also develop a sound knowledge of circuit design, especially in both precision analogue and power supply, as we are being approached more and more for a design of a complete system.
We have a small but effective team of mechanical designers and project managers and you would be working with them.
We are looking for a person who can develop their skills to liaise with our customer, to assess and discuss a project from its inception and be technical lead through to production and commissioning. Some travelling will be necessary (and the occasional trip abroad) but the vast majority of time will be spent at our North Devon base.
We do not expect to find somebody with the experience necessary, but a realistic and positive approach is vital. We are looking for a sound logical approach, which we can develop through in-house mentoring.
