This role is based at our Barnstaple location, part of the Power Electronics division, where we employ approximately 250 employees and specialise in the manufacture of wound components, printed-circuit board assemblies, cabinet wiring and electronic test equipment for the civil aircraft, space, and defence industries.

Role Overview and Responsibilities


Due to the rapid expansion of the Design Engineering department and expected increase in the number of ‘design and build’ & R&D projects, a role exists within Aero Stanrew for an Electronics design engineer. The Engineer will report directly to the Engineering Lead.

The Design Input is a set of requirements (technical, commercial, and statutory). The Engineers output is a set of manufacturing documentation (Parts Lists, Piece-part Drawings, Assembly Drawings, Test Specifications, Printed-Circuit Board artworks [which may be in electronic for as a set of files] etc.). The Engineer is responsible for authorising any of the above documentation, when generated by Design.


Key Responsibilities

Magnetics design capability:

  • Mains transformers, single and 3-phase, 50Hz and 400Hz, 2VA to 4kVA
  • Switch-mode power supply transformers and inductors to 1kVA
  • Filter inductors from small (20µH 300mA) to large (100µH 300A or 36H 120mA)

Electronic design:

  • Analogue (low frequency, but precision instrumentation circuitry) and digital circuit design, analysis and development. Power supply design (linear and switch-mode) would be an advantage
  • Thermal management for power circuitry
  • Printed circuit board layout (single, double-sided and multilayer)


  • Some appreciation of metalworking processes and materials used in electronic industry would be useful
  • Understanding and application of user safety standards and other statutory requirements
  • Working with the NPI team to deliver the new product on time, quality and cost
  • Assessing plant, test equipment tooling, drawings, permits and extra services
