    Our Barnstaple facility is located in North Devon. Founded in 1948, the site now employs approximately 250 employees and features the Aero Stanrew brand of electromagnetic components, printed-circuit board assemblies, cabinet wiring and electronic test equipment for safety critical applications in aerospace and defence, industrial and transportation industries.

    Role Overview and Responsibilities

    While much of Aero Stanrew's output is built to customer-defined specification, we are often required to provide assistance in resolving design shortcomings and resolving obsolescence issues. Additionally, we deal with projects in which we design the entire equipment in response to a basic requirement specification. Our chosen market is offering more opportunities for this type of work, and we are therefore keen to expand our design team.

     

    Magnetics design – product scope:

    • Mains transformers, single and 3-phase, 50Hz and 400Hz, 2VA to 4kVA (generally laminated or strip-wound core construction)
    • Multiphase-output transformers for high-performance applications
    • Switch-mode power supply transformers and inductors to 1kVA (generally ferrite or powder-core construction)
    • Filter inductors from small (20µH 300mA) to large (100μH 300A or 36H 120mA), common-mode and differential
    • Inter-phase reactors for rectifier circuits
    • High voltage transformers and inductors to 2kV
    • Magnetic Field producing devices – Solenoid actuators with plunger; Hall effect sensor pole-pieces and coils 

    Some knowledge of ‘exotic’ materials (sintered alloys; amorphous cores; cobalt-iron high flux) would be an advantage, as some of our requirements can only be met by use of these materials

     

    Attributes required:

    • Disciplined approach (company is ISO9001 certificated for design)
    • Understand the requirements of Purchasing, Production, Test in order to provide a suitably comprehensive manufacturing pack as Design Output
    • Mechanical design, some appreciation of metalworking processes and materials to the extent of parts used in the electronics industry would be useful
    • Understanding and application of user safety standards and other statutory requirements
    • Ability to negotiate constructively with customers and prospective customers to finalise specifications

    Responsibilities:

    • The Design Engineer’s role is to work closely with a Project Manager
    • The Design Input is a set of requirements (technical, commercial, and statutory), which may be negotiated with the Customer
    • The Design Engineer’s output is a set of manufacturing documentation (Parts Lists, Piece-part Drawings, Assembly Drawings, Test Specifications, Printed-Circuit Board artworks [which may be in electronic form as a set of files] etc). Very basic information may be required quickly to support a quotation to a prospective customer, becoming fuller if the quotation is accepted and an order is received The Design Engineer is responsible for authorising any of the above documentation, when  generated by Company Draughtsmen
    • The Design Engineer is also responsible for resolving technical issues in Production and updating documentation appropriately
    • The Design Engineer may be asked to assist, as a knowledgeable authority, when problems arise with customer's own designs, to recommend solutions, and to provide supportive advice, coaching and mentoring to junior engineers

    Given the nature of the activities candidates must be eligible to work on military products under the relevant jurisdiction license (including ITAR)

    BEng Electrical and/or Electronic Engineering (2.1 or higher) or BSc Physics (2.1 or higher)
