Role Overview and Responsibilities

Introduction

The purpose of the Buyer is to purchase products and services for a site, ensuring that they are obtained on time, at the best price, and to specification. They also work to ensure that the company's production runs smoothly by coordinating deliveries, maintaining stock levels, and ensuring technical support is available.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage supplier relationships, including selection, price negotiation, and procurement of materials and services in line with program requirements

  • Analyze, negotiate, and report on supplier price changes

  • Conduct commodity surveys to benchmark pricing, track market trends, and identify cost-saving opportunities.

  • Forecast market trends affecting material and service costs, availability, and supply risks.
  • Identify and qualify new or alternative suppliers, materials, and services that offer technical or commercial benefits.

  • Verify purchasing requisitions reflect accurate lead times; communicate changes that may impact work programs.

  • Review MRP and schedules for assigned parts; manage order placement and confirmations.

  • Identify supply issues and recommend corrective actions; manage and distribute Part Change Notices (PCNs).

  • Approve Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and source materials to support design changes.

  • Resolve supplier quality issues, including rejected materials, credits, and Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).

  • Mitigate cost exposure from excess inventory and price increases, securing appropriate approvals.

  • Collaborate across departments to forecast demand and ensure supply meets quality standards.

  • Ensure compliance with company codes of conduct, policies, and health & safety regulations.

  • Complete required administrative tasks and reporting.

  • Negotiate, optimize, and manage payment terms.

  • Stay current on international trade, import, and legal requirements.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives within scope of responsibility.

  • Monitor, control, and reduce excess stock and associated costs.

Desireable Skills and Experience (Core)

  • Qualifications or equivalent experience
  • 3+ years’ experience of Purchasing within a manufacturing or similar environment.
  • Ability to think strategically with an innovative approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent negotiation skills with proven track record of cost reduction through use of appropriate strategic purchasing tools.
  • Familiar with ERP, MRP systems & Purchasing systems.
  • Supplier Relationship Management.
  • Excellent communication, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.

Desireable Skills and Experience (Desirable)

  • Electronics/Electrical experience
  • CPIM, CSCP or related certification preferred.
  • Experience with high mix manufacturing.
  • Depth in planning, purchasing, and/or sourcing functions. Extensive experience in inventory management and supplier development
  • Experienced in Aerospace industry or similar industry.
