Role Overview and Responsibilities

Introduction

The Applications Engineer will provide technical expertise and customer support for the company’s portfolio of potentiometers, trimmers, rheostats, and rotary position encoders. This role is responsible for assisting customers with product selection, integration, and troubleshooting while also working closely with internal teams to define technical requirements for new product designs and custom solutions.

Key Responsibilities

Customer & Application Support

  • Serve as the primary technical point of contact for customers integrating rotary sensing and resistive components into their systems.
  • Provide recommendations for appropriate product selection based on electrical, mechanical, and environmental requirements.
  • Support design-in activities through schematic reviews, circuit analysis, and mechanical fit assessments.
  • Troubleshoot field issues and coordinate root cause analysis with the quality and engineering teams.

Technical Documentation & Training

  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, datasheets, application notes, and training materials for customers and sales teams.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date technical documentation and FAQs for standard and custom products.
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals and technical specifications for customer-specific designs.

Product Development & Engineering Interface

  • Collaborate with design and manufacturing engineers to communicate customer requirements and feedback.
  • Support product customization or modification requests (e.g., taper curves, resistance values, mechanical detents, or encoder resolution).
  • Participate in prototype evaluations and functional testing of new or modified components.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

    • Work with sales and marketing teams to provide pre-sales and post-sales technical support.
    • Assist in competitive benchmarking and identification of new application opportunities.
    • Provide input to R&D on emerging trends in motion control, position sensing, and analog signal adjustment.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

Core Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field
  • Background in electromechanical sensors or precision resistive components
  • Hands-on experience with electrical and mechanical testing of resistive and encoder devices.
  • Proficiency in tools such as CAD (SolidWorks, AutoCAD) and basic circuit simulation (e.g., SPICE, LTspice).
  • Understanding of environmental and reliability testing (e.g., temperature cycling, vibration, lifespan).

Desireable Skills and Experience

  • 2–5 years of experience in applications, design, or product engineering related to potentiometers, trimmers, rheostats, or rotary encoders.
  • Understanding of resistive materials, signal conditioning circuits, and electromechanical interface design.
  • Familiarity with analog circuits, voltage dividers, and sensor calibration.
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-oriented mindset.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and analytical thinking.
  • Customer-centric approach with a collaborative, team-oriented mindset.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.

Preferred Background

  • Experience in industrial automation, aerospace, automotive, or instrumentation markets.
  • Familiarity with digital position encoders, contactless sensing (Hall or magnetoresistive), and hybrid potentiometers.
  • Exposure to ISO 9001 or AS9100 environments and familiarity with qualification testing procedures.
