Role Overview and Responsibilities

As the Manufacturing Engineer at TT Electronics Fairford, you will provide technical direction and project management oversight to ensure robust, efficient, and continually improving production processes. The role will champion lean manufacturing, automation, and process excellence across all assembly lines, leading improvement initiatives from concept to implementation while supporting the development of graduates, apprentices, and T-Level students within the Engineering team.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

  • Process Development & Continuous Improvement
    • Drive lean manufacturing initiatives across production areas, applying Six Sigma and 8D problem-solving techniques to eliminate waste and reduce variation.
    • Conduct process reviews to identify opportunities for automation, simplification, and standardisation.
    • Define, document, and control manufacturing instructions, routings, and process parameters in alignment with AS9100 and company standards.
    • Evaluate process capability and implement improvements to increase labour efficiency, product quality, and throughput.
    • Support Engineering Change Requests (ECRs) and ensure timely implementation of process or document updates.
  • Strategic and Continuous improvement Alignment
    • Lead or contribute to the Site’s continuous improvement roadmap, ensuring projects align with productivity, quality, and cost targets.
    • Support or lead Kaizen and Value Stream Mapping (VSM) events as required.
    • Track and report KPIs for engineering performance as required (OEE, scrap, downtime, yield, etc.)
  • NPI and Design for Manufacture (DfM)
    • Participate in new product introduction (NPI) and design reviews, ensuring manufacturing feasibility and cost-effectiveness from the outset.
    • Develop and validate tooling, fixtures, and test jigs for new assemblies.
  • Project Management
    • Lead capital and process improvement projects, including equipment procurement, installation, validation, and commissioning.
    • Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and stakeholder communication for engineering and automation initiatives.
    • Work closely with suppliers and internal teams to ensure successful delivery of manufacturing and CAPEX projects.  
  • Data & Quality Focus
    • Analyse production data, scrap, and rework trends to identify root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
    • Support creation and closure of 8D reports and customer concessions.
    • Collaborate with Quality and Design Engineering to ensure robust process controls and compliance with customer requirements.
  • Customer & Cross-Functional Support
    • Interface directly with customer Engineering teams to support new product introductions and ongoing program improvements.
    • Act as a technical liaison between Design, Production, and Quality teams to ensure smooth introduction of new assemblies and engineering changes.
    • Support NPI reviews, Risk analysis, and readiness signoffs for production launch.
  • Safety & Compliance
    • Maintain high standards of Health & Safety across all engineering projects and ensure compliance with TT Electronics’ policies and statutory requirements.
    • Promote a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and right-first-time manufacturing.
  • Leadership & Team Development
    • Coach and mentor Manufacturing Engineers, Graduates, Apprentices, and T-Level students as required to ensure a strong pipeline of engineering capability.
    • Conduct regular one-to-one and monthly performance reviews to support development, performance, and engagement within the team.
    • Provide technical guidance and oversight on process design, equipment specification, and problem-solving activities.

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

Core Requirements

  • Strong background in lean manufacturing, process development, and automation. 
  • Demonstrable project management experience, ideally including capital equipment acquisition and validation.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills with ability to influence cross-functional teams.
  • Degree or equivalent experience in Manufacturing, Mechanical, or Industrial Engineering (or related discipline).
  • Competent in Microsoft Office, CAD tools, and ERP/MRP systems (Epicor preferred).
  • Experience in aerospace, defence, or other high-reliability manufacturing environments is advantageous.
